Description
This is the fully painted version of a drawing I did around Christmas. Not only is this one of my only paintings ever, but it's my first strictly digital work. I started with Photoshop CS2 and a mouse, but ended up buying an Intuos 3 about halfway through.
This was a huge learning process, with the painting going through many versions until this one.
Total time was somewhere around 30-40 hours. Yikes.
I may do some more with it, but I couldn't look at it any more, so I'm posting for comments and critiques.
Full size is 5960x4827 @ 400dpi

The dragon is floating though.
Put some shadow below to connect it to the ground.
Also: bring the atmosphere onto the dragon by painting the hue of the sky onto the back.

I think this shows good progress considering it's one of your only coloured pieces. The dragon could do with some more work...some lighter areas and highlights as well as some cooler colours for contrast...the greens of the background would reflect cooler, greener light upon him for instance.
The backgrounds a little dull and he looks a little pasted into it...but hey!..all that will come with more practise. Maybe you could try using a vignette layout in the future..this would allow you to concentrate on painting your characters and leave the backgrounds until you are more comfortable usind digital painting techniques.
In all I think I prefered the pencil version (which was great)...but your painting skills will only improve and I look froward to seeing more.

I'll definitely get some shadows going under the body! Don't know how I missed that. I even sat for about 10 minutes looking the painting over, checking and correcting little things, asking myself "What have I missed...? What have I missed...?" Uhhhhh, SHADOWS!
I'll work on the reflected/ambient lighting. It's one of those things where I KNOW what needs to happen, I just don't know HOW. Kinda like a car engine... In theory I know what's going on in there, but I couldn't begin to tell you how it all works in any useful way.
Thanks again! I appreciate the help!

seing this is your first try, compared to my first it really rocks man
the dragon design is beautiful as i pointed out in the penciled version
the background is also nice
my only crit would be the dragon itself is pretty monochromatic
if you could add some highlights and deep shadows under the wings or torso and also cast shadow on the ground, completed with a bounce light etc it would really improve the piece
but those are all IMO
loved the penciled version but this one is almost as good as the pencil version
