Description
This is another exercise I did to get my painting skills a little more advanced--it's the second time I've ever done a digital paintingFor this one, I started in Photoshop CS2 from scratch, working up a small sketch at 72 dpi, then enlarging the entire drawing to 5000 x 3600 pixels at 300 dpi, where I did the bulk of the work. I haven't a clue how many hours went into this.
As for the subject matter, it was just for fun. I've never drawn a spider, so I thought this would be a good opportunity.

I've got a Mac (obviously) with a bright flat panel display which runs at 1.8 gamma, while most PC's are set for 2.2. I may have to adjust my display settings if this doesn't display well for everyone. I don't want to put hours and hours into something that just looks like like a big black square
Ummm...yep. I just recalibrated my monitor--can't believe how off it was. Yikes. So, that's a dark picture! I'll see about bringing that up a bit.

ive got a tft so if i look at it from upwards i see it a bit lighter
you should brighten it a tad bit, but other than that its cool
ps...shouldnt spiders have hair on em?

nice composition and arachnid design
liked it a lot...the position of the eyes
the fangs and legs look pretty threatening
and the skull kinda emphasize it
my only crit would be it may need some highlight to seperate the legs and the body of the spider from the background. all the details kinda got lost in the shadows. but thats just IMO
great job man

I dunno about all that screen calibration stuff (to technical for me!!)...I would have thought this wanted to be a dark and moody piece, so I don't think it should be just 'lightened'...what it really needs is some more contrasts...as in painted contrasts. There seems to be a faint source light coming from the left and above the spider...make use of this...strengthen it up a bit (like it's a shaft of light filtering down from above...then paint in some more highlights onto the spiders head, back and legs (the two foremost left ones and maybe the first right one...thats OUR left and rights by the way!). This will alieviate the 'to dark' problem and throw emphasis on the area of most interest...the beasties face!
Otherwise this is a great piece!
(Some web here and there might not amiss either...think of Shelobs lair in Lord of the Rings!)

This started off as a tiny little jumping spider I saw in the bathroom one day--it was no bigger than a wee little lady-bug, legs included. It had really cool proportions (big choppers, large eyes, big front legs and little back legs), and such a cool looking face, even as small as it was, that it stuck in my head. So, this is kinda like his big, nasty brother.
